Moving Hints

Prior to Leaving:
ADDRESS CHANGE
Give the forwarding address to post office
Charge accounts, credit cards
Subscriptions
Notify relatives and friends
INSURANCE
Notify your company of new address – life, auto, health, fire
Maintain homeowners insurance policy until one day after closing
BANK
Arrange for banking in your new city; transfer accounts if necessary
UTILITY COMPANIES
Obtain any refunds or deposits
Arrange for disconnections or transfers for day of closing
MEDICAL DENTAL, PRESCRIPTIONS
Ask for referrals and transfer prescriptions
Obtain medical records from health care professionals
SCHOOLS
Arrange for copies of school records
THINGS TO REMEMBER
Empty and clean freezer and refrigerator
Empty and clean oven/microwave
Double check your moving plans including packing dates, move dates and delivery dates.

Moving Day:
Clearly mark boxes you'll need immediately
Transport jewelry, documents and other valuables yourself or use registered mail
Re-check attics, closets, drawers, etc. to make sure they're empty
Leave keys, garage door openers, appliance manuals and other important home documentation for new owners
AT YOUR NEW HOME
Check on service of telephone, HVAC, etc.
Have new address recorded on driver's license
Register car(s) within 30 days to avoid penalties
Apply for a new driver's license
Arrange for medical services
Register children in school
CLOSING DAY
Your proceeds may not be available until the day following closing
Bring to closing: driver’s license, house keys
